Why CAPP Certification?
Parking and transportation services have become a major element affecting the lives and activities of millions of citizens in the United States, Canada and around the world. As an industry, parking now accounts for billions of dollars and more than a million jobs each year, and as a profession, it is now a serious career choice. As such, it demands continuous information and specialized training.
The International Parking Institute, representing the world-wide parking and transportation profession, and the University of Virginia, since 1829 one of the most select institutions of higher learning in the United States, have combined their resources to create a rigorous program of professional training and examination culminating in the awarding of the designation, Certified Administration of Public Parking (CAPP).
The CAPP program is designed to provide continuous information and training to parking and transportation professionals, increase the body of knowledge and establish a benchmark of excellence for the industry, and provide a means by which parking and transportation professionals may demonstrate their proficiency and be recognized by their peers.
Embarking on the road to receiving your CAPP designation is a big step, but it could be the most important step in your career.
IPI CAPP Certification Courses
Nine or more different courses are specifically designed for the certification program and are offered during each two-year period. The instructors and content of these courses are approved and recognized by the University of Virginia. During a given two-year period, two five-day courses and at least seven two-day courses are held in conjunction with IPI annual conferences and educational seminars. Candidates are required to take both of the five-day sessions. At the end of the two-year period, all of the courses will be repeated and updated. These courses are open to every candidate.
The five-day sessions run concurrently with the annual International Parking Conference and Exposition. In even numbered years, they feature management topics. In other years, these sessions focus on industry-specific issues. Although these special certification courses are operated exclusive of most conference activities, candidates also have access to the exhibit hall so they can take advantage of the exposition and meet with exhibitors.
The two-day sessions on industry-specific material cover a wide variety of subjects including design and maintenance facilities, parking safety and security, dealing with the media, enforcement and adjudication, transportation issues, training your employees, the impact of state and federal governments on parking, revenue control and more. These courses are available to anyone interested, but a person must be a candidate in the program for attendance to be assigned a higher point value. Many of these courses are repeated and new subjects are added regularly.
These sessions, along with specific outside reading, are designed to cover the materials to be tested and help candidates identify areas in which they need to increase their knowledge. Courses include materials which become the property of the candidate, and additional materials are available from IPI's library. Furthermore, instructors are available for consultation throughout the program.
Each five-day session has a point value of 20, with a maximum of 40. For certification candidates, the two-day sessions each have a point value of 7.5, for a maximum accumulation of 30 points. Therefore, for candidates, this portion of the program a point value of 70. Combining the maximum scores from the courses and the personal data form gives a total possible score of 142.
CAPP Examination
Once the candidate's eligibility to sit for the examination has been confirmed, he is presented with several opportunities. The exam may be administered in conjunction with any IPI sponsored event, at IPI's headquarters or at the University of Virginia if written notice of intent is received at IPI headquarters at least 30 days prior to the event. IPI will make every effort to offer the examination to candidates at the most convenient times. An examination fee (currently $150 for members and $200 for non-members) is charged to each candidate to help offset the costs of establishing the validity and reliability of the test, as well as administering and scoring the examination.
CAPP Certification
Upon successful completion of the program, the candidate is permitted to use the designation "CAPP" for "Certified Administrator of Public Parking" and their certification is valid for a three (3) year period. The initials are used in all references to the professional through IPI.
At the annual conference following successful completion of the program, the CAPP's accomplishments are recognized at a formal awards ceremony where they receive a certificate and CAPP pin.
