NEED SOME IDEAS PLEASE! Posted on 6/6/2009 4:54:16 AM
Dear Forum,
Thank you for your great web site and I have read with interest the solutions and feed back in this column.
I am the centre manager for a small shopping centre in Caloundra Queensland Australia. The centre has 120 car parking spaces and is designed with one entry and one exit.
We have 13 specialty stores and an anchor tenant of a large IGA supermarket. We are always struggling with staff and other surrounding workers parking all day.
As well we have the main street shops one block away and we get their staff and customers parking here.
My question is how can we lessen the impact of stray parkers at low cost and minimal impact on the centre.
Thank you in advance for any information and ideas to our situation

It depends on what you mean by low cost. Having lived in Townsville I know that the problem of displacement parking will increase so you will have to install a system sometime.
Parkeon have just rolled out a system for pay and display which also captures number plates. S&B have a barrier system also with ANPR and chip coin. Both systems are flexible and can be programmed to give free parking to centre staff, discount parking for shoppers and full parking tariff for "strays". Enforcement is key ... and that info you'd have to pay me for.

Do a 4 hour no return within 4 hours or something along those lines. That way the people parking for work won't be able to because they will have to remove their cars after 4 hours and won't be able to come back but still ensures that people shopping can get 4 hours of parking?
