Project to fix residents' parking problems

Project to fix residents' parking problemsA Scunthorpe street that has suffered from a lack of car parking is getting a major makeover.
Somerby Road, on the town's Riddings Estate, is to be completely overhauled, with off-street parking created and steps to boost security in the area. There are more than 100 homes in Somerby Road, but many lack space for a car, leaving people no option but to park in the street.

However, as part of 15-million worth of improvement works for tenants, North Lincolnshire Homes (NLH) is in the process of creating around 40 new parking places. Some will be on drives, others in a communal parking area and in addition, remaining "rat runs" in the area will be shut down to help combat anti-social behaviour.

NLH's assistant director of regeneration, Pete Stones, said the project has the potential to provide a strong and lasting impact to tenants' lives. He said: "During our first two years very little work was carried out on external works such as fencing and footpaths, however we set aside financial provision for this work to be carried out and we are now embarking on this area of our improvement programme. "We feel these environmental works, which will include the closure of rat runs, would have huge benefits on reducing anti-social behaviour, as would securing communal entrances.

Somerby Road resident Kelly Horton, 22, has recently had a drive created outside her house. She said: "It is better now because every time my family came down, they couldn't get their cars parked."
