Wilmington Considers Private Parking Enforcement

Wilmington's mayor is considering replacing city parking enforcement personnel and meter attendants with private contractors who would issue citations more aggressively. |
City officials, who are facing a $7 million deficit, say they could be losing as much as $3 million a year because some meter attendants do not meet their goal of 25 tickets a day.
Mayor James Baker's administration says that $3 million could equal a property tax increase of about 10 percent.
But critics say it could hurt businesses and drive shoppers away to places where shopping is free. |
