Wilmington Considers Private Parking Enforcement

Wilmington Considers Private Parking EnforcementWilmington's mayor is considering replacing city parking enforcement personnel and meter attendants with private contractors who would issue citations more aggressively.
City officials, who are facing a $7 million deficit, say they could be losing as much as $3 million a year because some meter attendants do not meet their goal of 25 tickets a day.

Mayor James Baker's administration says that $3 million could equal a property tax increase of about 10 percent.

But critics say it could hurt businesses and drive shoppers away to places where shopping is free.
