Google, Google Maps and Parking

Google Maps and Parking

Google is quickly becoming our go-to for everyday tasks. At what time does the store close? Google it! What is the name of that song that says “oh, baby blah blah blah yeah yeah”? Google it! How do I get to my friend’s house avoiding the usual traffic jam at 18:00? Google it! At what time does my flight to Paris leave? Google it and Google will even link it to your email reservation on Gmail.

It should then come as no surprise that Google is making a small debut in the parking industry.

Google Maps was already able to take you to the nearest parking garage or lot. With the upcoming update, Google Maps will also tell you if parking at or near your destination will be easy or hard. The new feature will not be able to take you to a parking spot like other parking apps already do. However, Google Maps will warn you ahead of time of the difficulty in finding parking.

How will Google Maps do this?

Google Maps will use population and traffic statistics as well as information about nearby events (for example a football game or a concert) to warn you ahead of time. This new feature will probably not save anyone time, but, if you are in a hurry, you can always look for an “easy” parking situation.

Will Google Maps eventually take you straight to a parking spot? Only time will tell!
