Parking Garage at Katwijk Protecting the Coastline

Zeezijde parking garage

This remarkable parking garage is barely visible from the roadside, just a dipping driveway and a few parking signs, yet when you look back at it from the coast it’s lines not only compliment the beautiful sea side setting, it provides protection against dune erosion.

Katwijk Council needed to come up with a plan to create more parking spaces as the surrounding dunes were eroding and a new dyke was required which meant that some parking areas were lost. The resulting project is a parking garage which is completely integrated into the new dunes and does not block the views of the coast in any way.

The 490 metre long underground parking garage contains 663 parking spaces, 12 of which are handicapped spaces and four are installed with EV chargers. It features unique decorations in the internal stairwells to ensure drivers easily find their cars and the high quality parking management system is provided by none other than our very own Business Member, Park Assist, member of the TKH Group, integrated with sustainable LED lighting from BB-Lightconcepts, also part of the TKH Group.

The four emergency stairwells are sculptures in themselves, you hardly notice the fact that it’s a council car park and continue enjoying the surrounding landscape.

It is most definitely worth a trip to the Netherlands just to have a gander at this example of sustainable architecture. It is truly a masterpiece.
