In 2005 collaboration between a locksmith and a car parking management company with a security issue brought about the start of SMS. Richard Evans started working for local authorities in the parking industry before opening his own company (Local Parking Security). When Richards machines started to be targeted by thieves he contacted a local locksmith Paul Betteridge to see if he could help. Paul has been a locksmith for some 15 years (and is qualified as a Master Locksmith) and has been working with safe and lock solutions all of his working life so it wasnt long before he had a few ideas. After the build of several prototypes and extensive testing in house and by the criminal element once they were installed to Richards machines a design was refined and is the basis of what is being used today. Now Richards machines were safe it was thought that the devices may be of interest to other car park management businesses both local authority and private, SMS was started. Frank Aston came on board with his experience in the auto part manufacturing industry he helped in the production and quality control of the manufacture. Devices were built to cater to other machine types and several different lock options have now been developed. 3 Years on and SMS has over 4,000 products fitted to machines nationwide as well as being involved in testing security products for manufacturers both here and abroad.
