Worldsensing - creating Smart Cities

Worldsensing, founded in 2008 in Barcelona, Spain and based in London and Barcelona, is a market leader in innovative wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

It holds 2 divisions:

Go to Worldsensing Industrial Division

Worldsensing Industrial division offers an outstanding portfolio that includes highly reliable state-of-the-art monitoring solutions that are designed to meet the most demanding requirements of critical applications in multiple sectors such as civil engineering, oil & gas, industry, environmental/natural hazards and mining.

Go to Worldsensing Mobility division

Worldsensing Mobility holds a smart traffic management portfolio that includesbitcarrier logo

Worldsensing had his first seed capital round of investment in 2010. Loadsensing deployed its first large scale project at Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona’s Olympic Arena, in 2012.

Fastprk allowed Worldsensing to become one of the foremost technological companies, since it deployed the largest smart parking project (12,000 sensors) in Moscow.
Fastprk also contributed towards Worldsensing being labelled by prestigious “Pike Research” as one of the 17 companies actively shaping the Smart City eco-system.

In 2013 Worldsensing received its first significant Series-A investment. Since then, it holds a strong executive team and counts on the strategic investor JFME, with direct access to Acciona. This allowed the company to grow and acquire Bitcarrier (early 2014), a world-leader in traffic flux and journey time monitoring.
Today, the company employs over 40 highly qualified executives and engineers.

  • Fastprk- has won two major awards: the Stockholm Smart City Living Labs Global Award 2011 and the IBM Smart Camp 2010 London Award.
  • Bitcarrier was IBM Smart Camp Winner (2011), and it has been recognised by Analyst Firm Gartner as "Cool Vendor 2013".
  • Ignasi Vilajosana, Worldsensing’s CEO, was named the first Spanish Endeavor Entrepreneur (2014).

Product information

Fastprk by Wordsensingreal time information via smartphone

Fastprk is an intelligent parking system helping drivers to find a parking spot quicker and allowing cities to manage their parking spaces more efficiently.

As one of the world’s most advanced and reliable smart parking systems, it informs drivers where to find vacant parking spaces via smart phones or electronic street panels. Traffic density in the city centres is, therefore, reduced after Fastprk has been deployed, helping to create a greener city.

Fastprk also allows the city to monitor and manage the parking bays 24/7, obtaining real-time occupancy, and correlating it with payment information (the system can be connected to a mobile paying platform or to any larger platform).

Once installed, this technology can translate to significant extra revenues for the city through the increase in occupancy and reduction in non-payment. Fastprk is a highly scalable solution and it is proven to facilitate truly large-scale city deployments.

How does it work?

Fastprk Pantalla MacThe system relies on embedded sensors in each parking bay in the street.

When a car parks over the sensor, it is detected and the sensor relays that information -wirelessly- to the gateway, which sends the information via the Internet to the database in real time.

One single gateway covers an area of about 1km.

The occupancy is then instantly reported to users via apps and illuminated panels in the street

Features and benefits:

FastprkOutstanding technology - Fastprk’s technology is wireless and runs on magnetic -and other- sensors.

Cutting edge design - Fastprk's sensor innovative design makes them resistant to cleaning/snow machines and potential vandalism.

Easy installation and maintenance - Each sensor's installation only takes 8 minutes. The nodes can support 60 Tons and are waterproof (IP67 protection), with batteries lasting up to 4 years.

Economically advantageous - The core benefit of this approach is increased income from:

  • An increase in the amount of tickets purchased by augmenting parking occupation.
  • A reduction of non-paying drivers, by improving the enforcement staff monitoring system.
  • The optimisation of human resources by increasing the ratio of cars per controller.\

What is Bitcarrier?

Bitcarrier is a real-time intelligent traffic management and information solution designed for both urban and interurban environments.

For whom?

bitcarrier map
For authorities and infrastructure operators -
Bitcarrier allows them to satisfy the need for traffic optimisation, providing them with the following data in real time:

  • Travel times between two points and vehicles’ average speed
  • Traffic intensity and passage time through toll gates
  • Alarms for detection of incidents and congestion
  • Information to design origin-destination matrixes and traffic density predictions

For drivers - Bitcarrier provides drivers with traffic information in real time, along with predicting the time to their destination.  By having this information, drivers can save time and money while protecting their data.

How does it work?

Bitcarrier uses a strongly protected technology based on wireless sensors which scan Bluetooth and Wifi signals sent by mobile devices and vehicles within urban roads and motorways.

By using this anonymous data, the system audits traffic flux, which enables the managing authority to better manage the traffic flow depending on where the most congested roads are.

At the same time, the system provides drivers with real-time information about journey time.

Features and benefits

  • Real-time information 24/7 for better and faster decision-making.
  • Easy and fast implementation. Easy maintenance.
  • Integration with TMCs and information dissemination.
  • Global outlook of the network.
  • Traffic optimisation: Reduction of travel times and congestion.
  • Environmental sustainability: Reduction of greenhouse gases.
  • Value-added information provided to travellers.

SUCCESS STORY: Spanish Motorways, Abertis Group 2010-11

bitcarrier - success storyIn 2010-11 Bitcarrier was implemented along 1500 km of the Spanish motorways belonging to the Abertis Group. Thanks to the accurate real information provided by Bitcarrier, the Abertis Traffic Management Centre is now able to tackle incidents as soon as they arise, act promptly and even anticipate and prevent major traffic problems.

Currently, Bitcarrier is providing accurate travel time information for drivers through approximately 120 Variable Message Signs (VMS) used on the highways. Each VMS simultaneously displays up to three travel times so that any driver has accurate travel time information. Frequent users of the Abertis highways consider this information to be an extremely useful, value-added service provided by the highway operator.

Moreover, the information provided by the solution is the basis for the information of service levels published in the public website of the highway operator, and it can be checked from any PC or mobile device with Internet connectivity.
