Virta is looking for a Development Manager to Finland to ramp-up and manages a new software R&D center organisation in a selected Eastern European country.
Virta’s software development has been done mostly locally in Finland, though our technology organisation has always been international with close to twenty different nationalities. As our business grows more and more globally, we are planning to open a new technology R&D center in East Europe inside the EU. We are now looking for an Offsite Development Manager to work in our Finnish organisation to plan, create and lead the new R&D center.
As a Development Manager, you will be positioned in Finland, working closely together with both the Finnish organisation and the new East Europe R&D organisation, though of course frequent travel between these countries will be needed.
What we expect from you:
Experience in IT management, especially working with remote teams
Understanding how remote teams works and what doesn’t and what’s the best way to create well working organisation in a new country
Experience in working in an international environment with people from many different nationalities and cultures, good people skills, and leadership skills
Understanding of modern agile development methods and how to make them work with remote and mixed teams
Financial understanding on creating budgets, following them, reporting of results, etc.
Hands-on attitude: you will need to handle all kinds of practicalities personally. You will be starting (almost) from the scratch and there won’t be ”someone else” to handle practical things for you.
Getting things done – good plans are always important, but plans have no value if they don’t get implemented. We value real results more than perfect plans.
You have enough persistence and determination: it takes a certain stubborn attitude and time to build simple solutions to complex problems. You understand the concept of building solutions that are easily maintainable, of good quality, AND are also scalable.
What you will be responsible for:
Analysing and selecting a location for Virta’s new Eastern Europe R&D center (initial screening has already been done, so you don’t need to start from zero)
Developing practicalities from the start: find a suitable partner company to help with recruiting the people, negotiate a contract with the company, work together with the partner company in finding and recruiting the people, set up an office with the partner company, manage people onboarding, etc.
After the initial ramp up, manage and develop the R&D center’s work from Finland, grow and expand the team, and be accountable for the teams' results
The new R&D center’s first responsibilities are internal process automation and internal tools, so as a Development Manager, after the initial ramp up, you will also be working closely on these topics (planning what to do, making project plans, leading the work, etc.)
Organising co-operation between the local people in Finland and with the remote team in the new R&D center
Participating actively in Virta’s overall process development in order to create efficient working processes where part of the personnel are located in Finland, part in the new remote location
Taking full responsibility for all the R&D center’s operations and results

You will report to Head of Development, but you will be working closely with the CTO and the other top management of Virta, with all the other development managers and other personnel of Virta’s technology unit as well as with people from different business units.
