DFW International Airport Installs Free Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Ports

New chargers support cleaner air initiatives, maintain DFW edge in sustainability

Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport today unveiled two new electric vehicle (EV) charging ports which are available for free to customers who park using the DFW Airport Valet service. The addition of an electric vehicle charging station marks a new milestone in the Airport’s dedication to sustainability by supporting customers who own electric cars.

“We are proud to continue our work on green initiatives by announcing these electric vehicle charging ports today,” said Jeff Fegan, CEO of DFW International Airport. “While there is not a huge demand for this service so far, we are pleased to be at the forefront of this emerging technology and we are also pleased to support those customers who, like DFW, are making choices that keep our air cleaner.”

The charging ports work on most typically available electric vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf. The new electric car chargers are able to fully charge a typical electric vehicle in about 3 to 4 hours. A standard 110-volt electrical outlet would require 10 to 15 hours to fully charge an electric car.

“The addition of electric car charging really elevates the level of customer service available at DFW Airport Valet,” said Ken Buchanan, executive vice president of revenue management at DFW. “It offers cutting edge capability and a great convenience to our customers.”

DFW Airport Valet operators will manage the charging stations so they can be easily accessed from anywhere in the terminal parking areas, and so they can be made available to multiple customers as needed. The Airport will continue to monitor and study the need for more EV charging stations in other terminals.

The Airport’s EV charging station is a two-port PEP Station, boasting Level 2 (240 volt, alternating current) support as plug-in charging ports, manufactured by Hubbell. The charging ports are installed in the valet level of Terminal D, but customers can have their cars charged by simply dropping off their vehicle at any DFW Airport Valet stand.
