City of West Hollywood Awards Contract to Unitronics to Build an Automated Vehicle Storage and Retrieval System

The City of West Hollywood has awarded a $2.6 million contract to Unitronics to design, engineer, fabricate, install and maintain a 200-car automated vehicle storage and retrieval system for the West Hollywood City Hall Automated Garage and Community Plaza Project which will be located at 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard.
City staff, residents and the City Council continue to work in upgrading
the citys infrastructure to make sure our city meets the needs of a dynamic community, said West Hollywood Mayor John J. Duran.

The expansion of City Hall and the building of the new automated parking garage not only will provide for a better experience to residents and visitors, it will also provide for much needed additional parking while reducing the carbon footprint that a traditional parking structure would generate otherwise, added Mayor Duran.

Automated parking garages can hold as many as three times the number of cars as traditional ramp-style parking garages. Operationally, automated parking garages provide customers with a valet-like parking experience that is fast, safe, and convenient. They are also less expensive to build when compared to conventional parking garages. Automated parking garages utilize computer-controlled motorized lifts, conveyors and shuttles to transport cars from the arrival level to a parking space and vice versa, without human assistance.

Since 1989, Unitronics, a unique leading company with international presence, has focused on three principal fields of activity, which are implemented by three business divisions: Automation Products, Automated Logistics Systems and Automated Parking Solutions. Through its Automated Parking Solutions division, Unitronics provides design, production, integration, installation, support and maintenance services for automatic parking systems. These services include traffic and parking surveys, conceptual solutions and design, detailed engineering, construction, installation, implementation, operation and maintenance.
GREEN solutions and LEED certification are major factors in Unitronics Automated Parking Solutions designs.

Some of the additional benefits of automated parking garages include.

  • They require less real estate than a conventional parking structures
  • Faster construction times than conventional parking structures
  • Provide potential credits towards LEED Certification
  • Systems are delivered as pre-fabricated components and assembled on site
  • Cost-savings because excavation costs are kept to a minimum; space; lighting and power requirements are reduced
  • Noise insulation is no longer a necessity
  • No need for energy-intensive ventilations as vehicles are not being driven into facility
  • Reliable technology is manufactured to high tolerances and has few moving parts reducing maintenance costs.

Automated parking garages pollute far less than conventional garages.

For the proposed 200-space parking garage, the reduction in CO2 emissions is equal to taking 92 cars off of the road each year or planting 67,000 trees.

The West Hollywood City Hall Automated Garage and Community Plaza Project is one of three components of the Citys 25 th Anniversary Capital Project which also includes Phase I of the West Hollywood Park Master Plan and Phase I of the Plummer Park Master Plan.

One of the City of West Hollywoods primary strategic goals is to develop parking opportunities through the creation of off-street parking opportunities near all business districts. The City of West Hollywood is well known for introducing new parking technology to the public before other cities including such innovative parking solutions as the Parking Meter Cash Key Program which is a pre-programmed, refillable key for use at West Hollywood parking meters; and Parking Pay Stations which enables users via credit card to purchase parking time or add to existing parking time at any machine or by using a cellular phone.
