City to begin parking-lot face-lift

The city of Beverly is scheduled to begin a $1.2 million reconstruction of its four downtown parking lots Monday.
The improvement to the municipal lots, all on side streets off Cabot Street, will include new pavement, lighting, landscaping, and replacement of parking meters with pay-and-display stations.

"I think it'll help put a shine on the downtown," Mayor Bill Scanlon said. "It's a nice step in the right direction."

The $1.2 million cost will be paid for with money from parking meter receipts and parking meter violations, according to Planning Director Tina Cassidy.

Work will begin first on the Hale Street/Briscoe Street lot across from the fire station and the Pond Street parking lot behind Brown's Bicycles. That work is expected to take four to five weeks.

The contractor, I.W. Harding Construction, will then begin work on the Pond Street/Chapman Street lot behind Casa de Moda and Beverly Cooperative Bank and the lot between Washington Street and Franklin Place behind the Lucky Dog.

The four lots have a total of 234 parking spaces. The entire project should take about nine weeks, Cassidy said.

Drivers will pay for parking through pay-and-display stations that accept dollar bills and give change, Cassidy said. The machines issue a ticket that must be displayed in the vehicle.

During construction, signs will be posted to notify downtown employees and customers of construction details, detours and partial-lot closures on a day-to-day basis, according to a press release from the city.

No overnight parking or parking within marked construction zones will be allowed. Vehicles violating those rules will be subject to fines and towing.

The contractor will begin moving construction equipment to the first two lots Monday, and construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday.
