Hanscom Air Force Base Boosts Security with Automatic Vehicle Identification and Access Control System Featuring TransCore(tm) Products
HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass., April 14, 2003 - TransCore is providing eGo radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder tags and readers as part of an automatic vehicle identification (AVI) and access control system at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass. The installation is an opportunity for the U.S. Air Force to evaluate the use of wireless RFID technology for base security applications and could lead to adoption at additional bases. In support of U.S. homeland security efforts, TransCore is moving aggressively to deploy its proven RFID technology in new military base security applications. TransCore has extensive prior experience with RFID systems for enhanced security and efficiency at border crossings, trade corridors, airports and seaports.
HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass., April 14, 2003 - TransCore is providing eGo radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder tags and readers as part of an automatic vehicle identification (AVI) and access control system at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass. The installation is an opportunity for the U.S. Air Force to evaluate the use of wireless RFID technology for base security applications and could lead to adoption at additional bases. In support of U.S. homeland security efforts, TransCore is moving aggressively to deploy its proven RFID technology in new military base security applications. TransCore has extensive prior experience with RFID systems for enhanced security and efficiency at border crossings, trade corridors, airports and seaports.
The Hanscom Air Force Base system will use field-proven TransCore technology, including the eGo windshield sticker tag, a paper-thin, read/write, non-battery transponder tag with performance capabilities similar to bulkier, more expensive traditional tags. The system will also use TransCore's eGo 2110 dual-mode tag reader. These products are being provided for the project through the company's dealer, Secure Applications, Inc. of Amherst, N.H., a subcontractor to primary contractor, Radian, Inc. of Alexandria, Va. In the first phase of the project, TransCore will provide one reader and 250 tags, with significantly more being planned for later phases of this USAF security enhancement program.
The AVI system at Hanscom Air Force Base will enhance security and efficiency by positively identifying vehicles authorized for base access and processing them quickly. Authorized vehicles will be equipped with a windshield sticker tag encoded with a specific identity number. As an authorized vehicle drives up to a base access point, a reader will recognize its identity code and let the system know it is a "friendly" vehicle. If the vehicle does not have an authorized tag, access is denied. The Hanscom AVI system will be fully integrated with additional controls so that in order to gain access, a registered RFID tag must be read/verified and federal employee badges must be presented by the driver and each vehicle passenger and read/verified.
