Construction slated to start on May 2, will add 140 spaces to current lot
When there is nowhere else to go, build up.
The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center will begin building a $2.6 million, one-level parking garage on the west end of the current parking lot off Golf Course Road.
Called Kroc Project Park, construction should get under way May 2, and wrap up by September.
It will add 140 spaces to the 353-space lot.
"It's been pretty consistent," said John Chamness, director of the nearly 18,000-member community center that has seen high demand during busy hours for parking spaces. "We've been open for almost 20 months now and membership has stayed right at that level."
The Salvation Army Territorial Kroc Center fund will provide $2 million for the project, in large part due to the parking demand. The remaining amount will be funded by local Kroc Center building reserves.
"We've become the No. 1 Kroc Center in the United States because of our facility," Chamness said of the building that has hosted 16 cities looking to build their own community center on tours of the local spot.
The Kroc Center will remain open for regular hours during the construction.
Hours of construction will typically be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. During this time, construction workers and large equipment will be operating in a fenced-off section at the west-end of The Kroc Center parking lot.
To maximize the use of the remaining available parking, patrons are encouraged to help by carpooling or using alternative transportation, including walking, running and riding bikes on the Centennial Trail and utilizing public transportation, a press release from the center states.
Because of the Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters donation, membership rates, programming and events won't be affected.
"We understand that there is a need for additional parking," said Major Ben Markham, director of operations and business, "and we're extremely excited to be able to more forward with this project."
The Kroc Center was projected to reach a total of 8,000 members before it opened, but currently, averages 2,000 visitors per day.
