Melilli Plaza paving begins this week
Paving of the Melilli Plaza parking lot is expected to begin this week, according to Parking Director Tom Hartley.
The right portion of the parking lot under construction since mid-July has undergone nearly three months of rebeautification including removal of several of the surrounding trees, demolition of the previously existing pavement and severe leveling of the two lots, to be combined as one.
Expected to last until about mid-October, the construction will fuse the City Hall parking lot with the current Melilli Plaza Municipal parking lot to create a single parking area. Next week, the left portion of the lot the one bordering Washington Street will be pulverized.
Additional improvements to the infrastructure will include bike parking, improved lighting and security surveillance and the insertion of two automated gates, one at each entrance.
A total of 84 spaces will be created, according to Director of Planning, Conservation and Development Bill Warner. In actuality, there will be no additional spaces being built, though the fusion of the two lots will make it easier and more convenient for locals to access those spots not previously used. All 84 spaces will remain on the City Hall side, or the right hand portion of the parking lot. No parking spaces are expected to be created or lost on the left portion.
According to Warner, the construction project has been in the works for approximately 18 months. Priced at under $1 million, the new parking area will be built by Xenelis Construction, a contractor out of Middlefield.
Currently there are 174 parking spaces available in the Melilli Plaza parking lot and 87 in the City Hall parking lot261 spaces total, Warner said. The portion slated for demolition next week has 113 parking spaces. For now, additional parking is available behind Kid City on Washington St. and in the Upper Arcade at the Courthouse.
