Middletown parking areas free for the first 10 minutes, thanks to new vehicle detection system
Drivers will now get the first 10 minutes free when parking on Main Street, according to Mayor Sebastian Giuliano.
A vehicle detection system set to be installed on Monday, Sept. 19 will make this possible.
The sensors, according to Giuliano, will register vehicles parked at any of the meters on Main Street and communicate with parking meters. They will identify the parking spaces of vehicles that are paid for and the ones that arent paid for, according to an unofficial press release from the Parking Department. The information from the sensors will be sent directly to parking attendants.
The new sensors will register the vehicles and apply the free 10 minutes the moment a vehicle drives over it.
Giuliano said this is good because it will give drivers that have to make a quick stop or need to get change for the meter some extra time to do that.
Like we offer the first hour free in the parking lot across from town hall, Giuliano said, the meters will be free, except only for 10 minutes.
Once the car leaves the space the meters will be set back at zero, Giuliano said.
The sensors will be installed below the street surface, which is why the installation process will be done in the late evenings and early morning hours, to cause minimal disruption during the busy working hours.
According to Acting Director of Parking Roger Beliveau, the sensors are smaller than a soda can, and will be virtually unnoticeable to the public.
Beliveau said the sensors will be a great tool for a complete reporting on space utilization block by block and actual demand for parking at any given time.
I think its quite silly, said Elaine Sheppard, who was in the process of placing quarters in a meter on Main Street. There are so many other things they could be wasting money on- cleaning up the streets or education.
But Betty Johnson, a Middletown resident said as long as they dont put any parking Kiosks like the one across from the Town Hall she can deal with the sensors.
I dont think this is that big of a deal, she said. But Kiosks will create a mess.
In the Parking Departments press release they say that the money being used to install these sensors and all other equipment installed by the department is paid for by revenue collected through parking meters and parking lots not taxpayers money.
