U.S. Army Taps TransCore for Access Control Technology Testbed

DALLAS, Jan. 7, 2003 - Tapped by the U.S. Army to participate in establishing a testbed for access control technology, TransCore is implementing a wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) system for automatic vehicle identification (AVI) and access control at Fort Monmouth, N.J., for the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command, Research, Development & Engineering Center, Night Vision & Electronic Sensors Directorate. The testbed capability is operational and will be used for an indefinite period to evaluate available and emerging access control technologies.
Transcore1.gifFort Monmouth's system works by automatically identifying authorized vehicles through a dedicated AVI lane. Authorized vehicles will be equipped with RFID transponder tags. When these "friendly" vehicles enter the AVI lane, an RFID reader will recognize their tag's unique identification code, alerting the system to give drivers a green light signal to proceed. By integrating this capability with complementary access control and personnel authentication technologies, the Army hopes to make access control at Fort Monmouth as automated as possible, diverting only non-authorized traffic for closer handling.

The system will use field-proven TransCore technology, including the eGo™ windshield sticker tag, a paper-thin, read/write, non-battery transponder tag with performance capabilities similar to bulkier, more expensive traditional tags. The system will also use TransCore's eGo 2110 dual-mode tag reader and SmartWatch™ gate management software.

The system verifies the integrity of shipping containers entering the United States from Japan and monitors freight as it travels over U.S. Interstates in commercial vehicles and passes between the United States and Canada.
