Airport plans new long-term parking lot

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will get some new long-term parking to go along with its new international terminal.
The airport plans to add a 2,500-space long-term parking lot to serve the new east-side terminal slated to open next year.

The new lot on airport property near the intersection of Aviation Boulevard and Loop Road will have five levels and could expand to 4,000 spaces in the future.

Passengers using the lot will reach the airport by shuttle.

Construction is expected to begin in March. A separate 1,100-space short-term parking lot is already under construction next to the international terminal.

The airport, which currently has more than 30,000 parking spaces of all kinds, had previously considered buying a portion of land from the site of the former Ford auto plant in Hapeville for long-term parking but decided against it. Instead, landowner Jacoby Development struck a deal to sell a piece of the  land to the Hapeville Development Authority.

The international terminal, which will include a 12-gate Concourse F, will expand Hartsfield-Jackson's capacity for international flights and open a second entrance to the airport complex near the east end of the existing concourses.

Airport leaders say that, as they prepare to open the new terminal in April 2012 they will advise international travelers to take I-75 to the new terminal.
