AISC visit Bourne Parking
The successful use of steel in the UK car park market has long been of interest to the American Institute of Steel Construction, where concrete dominates the US car park sector and steel is now seen as having a huge growth potential.
With this in mind Dorset based Bourne Parking Ltd, a subsidiary of Bourne Steel and part of the Bourne Group, was asked by Derek Tordoff, Director General of the British Constructional Steelwork Association, to show the AISC’s National Project Director Bill Pascoli around several car parks constructed in steel by Bourne Parking over the past few years.
Mr Pascoli was in the UK to attend the Parkex conference at the NEC in Birmingham, which is one of the largest parking conferences and exhibitions in Europe. His primary interest was in taking ideas and technology back to the US.
His tour of Bourne Parking’s projects included a car park at Medway Maritime Hospital in Kent, which was built in two phases within a live operational site and represented one of the first uses of Bourne Parking’s long span BourneDeck technology in the UK.
From here the visit included tours of some of the car parks constructed using Bourne’s Montex modular frame technology, namely a project for Asda at Gravesend, a 925 space car park for the New Romford PFI Hospital in Essex and a development of 11 car parks, providing a total of 3116 spaces, designed and constructed over a two year period for Prudential on the GreenPark site in Reading.

All of these projects highlighted both the technical and construction advantages of using steel over concrete and Mr Pascoli reflected that the UK is about five years ahead of the US in designing and building steel-framed car parks. However, this is now being recognised and with the help of ideas gained from the UK visit, Mr Pascoli hopes that designers and specifiers in the US will capitalise on this future growth market.
