Arcontia rolls out the new e-ticketing reader chosen by Norwegian State Railways (NSB)

1000 contactless smart card readers for the new onboard electronic ticketing system will be the new equipment for train conductors in Norway.
Gothenburg 28-10-2005 – Arcontia AB, a contactless smart card reader supplier in RFID markets, today announces that its contactless smart card readers were rolled out to the Norwegian State Railways (NSB) for use within the nationwide electronic e-ticketing project. In total, 1000 pocket PC’s with the attached compact flash readers are to be used by train conductors across the country.

The Norwegian company Unified Consulting and Arcontia have been cooperating since February 2005 regarding tthe implementation of the electronic ticketing issue in the Mobile Terminal system (the MT project) for the Norwegian State Railways. The MT project is an important sub-project in the overall KISO project, introducing electronic ticketing for the Norwegian PTO’s as Norwegian State Railways, Stor-Oslo Lokaltrafikk (buses) and Oslo Sporveier (metro, trams, buses).

"Our customer The Norwegian State Railways had a series of ambitious requirements regarding smartcard readers, based on leading-edge technology involving the Philips Mifare DESFire card standard. We delivered the software for mobile electronic ticketing, and couldn't have done it on schedule without Arcontia -- the only supplier who was able to fulfil the customer demands in the limited time available", says Lars Ivar Næss, project leader at Unified Consulting".

“When we at NSB start the e-ticketing in 2006, we are dependent on the smart card reader to read and validate tickets on board the train. The combination of the PDA and the smart card reader gives the conductor the possibility to see what the smart card contains and sell and validate electronic tickets. Without the reader the conductor would be practically (virtually) blind and not know what kind of tickets a card contains.

Working in the train validating and selling tickets is a different environment from sitting in front of a computer in an office. Therefore we depend on ergonomic equipment adapted to the conductors working environment. We are very happy for the slim design and the light weight of the smart card reader from Arcontia that will simplify the work in the train”, says Benedicte M. Overgaard for NSB, Project Manager for Mobile Terminals.
