Bournemouth green with new solar powered Aura

Bournemouth Borough Council is actively demonstrating its green credentials with the latest purchase of 48 solar powered pay and display parking machines.

They are Metric Auras which will go live in early July in readiness for the resorts anticipated busiest months of the summer season.

Bournemouth is currently installing a further 12 Metric Auras half of which are solar powered between the towns two piers.

The 60 machines were purchased as part of a tender which was won by Swindon-based Metric who now have approaching 230 pay and display machines in the borough.

Said Bournemouths Enforcement and Parking Manager Gerry Bolland: Metric parking machines in this town go back many years we have at least 60 of their Autoslots still operating satisfactorily.

We also have a large number of Accents working efficiently and now Auras are taking over because their construction is more advanced and of a high quality. We believe the Aura is the machine of the future.

The 48 solar powered Auras now being installed will border the Town Hall and as well as being sited in residential areas just two or three streets from the shoreline.

Said Mr. Bolland: We first tested the solar powered machines on a shoreline area so that we could judge their performance in all kinds of weather.

We decided on solar power which is in accordance with the councils energy policy with regard to environmental issues. This is as well as our position to consider powering equipment by alternative means where possible and parking is one such application.

The majority of Bournemouths Metric machines are networked to their ASLAN Back Office system and the council is looking at a new web based solution which the Metric system offers.

He said using the system enabled contractors to collect coin boxes from the machines at different times for safety reasons, and allowed other council organisations with wireless communication to monitor their own equipment.

He added that a web based system would be even more beneficial to the borough.

Gerry Bolland was one of many visitors to the Metric stand at the recent Parkex exhibition. He met Metrics Managing Director Jochen Oehmen and members of Metrics sales team including Alan Grimley who services the Bournemouth BC account.

Metric say Traffex / Parkex 2009 was a highly successful exhibition for them.
