Bournemouth Holidaymakers and Residents Park More with RingGo
Bournemouth Borough Council has become the first local authority in the UK to offer "RingGo parking permits" - an extension of the UK's leading phone parking service.
The permits allow residents and visitors to purchase longer-term parking at a reduced fee and the service has been rolled out in time for the key holiday season, so locals and visitors can pay for their summertime parking with a single phone call.
The new monthly RingGo permit enables shoppers, commuters and holidaymakers to park at any time in most council-operated parking locations across the town. With daily charges of up to 12 for 24 hours, the monthly RingGo permit costing 69 offers a substantial discount over the standard tariff. A weekly permit, offered at Hengisbury Head, has a charge of 35 for the week - half the price that all-day, daily parking costs.
These introductions mean that locals, who may be travelling more frequently into town to shop, or taking their children to the beach over the holidays, can make a one-off call, and then park without paying for the rest of the period.
Bournemouth Council is also extending RingGo phone parking to the area between Boscombe and Bournemouth piers. Undercliffe Drive runs the length of the beach, so is a prime site for locals and tourists to park, especially during the summer months.
With RingGo implemented in 2006, Bournemouth is one of the service's most established sites and this makes it one of the best indicators of the increasing popularity of phone parking. Despite 2006 being a record year for Bournemouth, this June has seen a year-on-year increase of 25 per cent in usage, indicating the eagerness with which consumers are moving to cashless.
Gerry Bolland, Parking and Enforcement Manager with Bournemouth Borough Council says of RingGo: "Three years ago when we first rolled out phone parking, some people thought it a niche offering, even a gimmick. These days though, everyone expects to be able to pay for their parking by credit or debit card, so offering RingGo is a necessity, not an option."
"We're a prime tourist site and parking services are a vital part of our offering to both residents and visitors. With many locals taking time off over the summer and visitors staying for sometimes fairly long periods, offering a hassle free, one-off payment to park in most council-operated sites, is an obvious step, and one we think people will greatly appreciate."
Bournemouth Council has also been using RingGo locally, to promote parking services more widely within the town and particularly in discussions with the local Chamber of Commerce.
Nigel Hedges, President of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce said: "At a time when people are tightening their purse strings, every additional cost can seem like a barrier. Here in Bournemouth, though, we are offering residents and visitors a convenient way to plan for one of these costs and at the same time offering longer term parking at a reduced rate."
