The pay and display system has been heavily criticised in Tunbridge Wells, as parkers have to hurry back to beat the expiry time on their ticket. The Tunbridge Wells Borough Council have listened to this feed-back and together with Cale BriParc introduced a system where you can pay at the end of your stay, using either a credit or debit card. The machines can accept both coins and credit/debit cards. Coin payments initiate a ‘Pre Payment Session’ ( conventional pay and display) and cards initiate a ‘Post Payment Session’. Drivers can check in using their card at one machine in the car park and check out at another machine in the same car park.
The post payment system (Cale PoP) has successfully been used in Scandinavia for 15 years.
If this pilot installation at the Great Hall car park is a success, the technology will be rolled out across the town's five multi-storeys.
Steve Nicholls, managing director of Cale, the Paddock Wood-based company behind this system, said: This car park is good to test the concept. It's not too big or small and it has a good turn-over of vehicles. We are really excited. We've put in a lot of effort to get this right."
