CAR PARK, MEDWAY MARITIME HOSPITAL – COMPLETION OF PROJECT

Bourne Parking Ltd is proud to announce the opening almost one month ahead of schedule of the Medway Maritime Hospital decked car park in Gillingham, Kent. This L2m project, which commenced in September, provides a high quality and cost effective solution to the parking issues at the Hospital, giving additional spaces for both staff and visitors.
The car park was officially opened on May 14 by Paul Clark, MP for Gillingham, along with the Medway NHS Trust Chairman, Janardan Sofat, who paid a tribute to the main contractor Bourne Parking and everyone associated with the project, including members of staff who had participated in a park and ride initiative whilst construction was in progress.

The Medway project represents one of the first uses of Bourne Parking’s unique long span Bourne Deck technology in the UK, following in excess of 2 million square meters of the flooring having been installed throughout Europe. This technology has been used in the construction of Europe’s largest car park at Car Park 2, Cologne Airport, Germany, which was built in 1997 and has a capacity for almost 6,000 cars within a floor area of 130,000m2. Cologne Airport utilised this technology again for the construction of Car Park 3, which was a not insubstantial 92,000m2.

The Medway Maritime Hospital car park was built in two phases within a live operational car park site still in use by visitors, and was located immediately in front of the main hospital A & E entrance. Rapid and safe phased construction techniques ensured the shortest possible on site construction programme with minimal disruption to existing Hospital facilities. The final product is a structure exhibiting all the qualities of a modern, safe and low maintenance car park building.

The project has been designed with a 16m clear span column grid configuration, meaning there are no columns in the parking bays, therefore ensuring that the car park is easy and safe in use for hospital visitors and staff alike. Despite this clear span arrangement the overall floor depths are shallow. Furthermore the high quality decking system has been supplied as standard with a factory applied white soffit finish to ensure a bright and airy internal appearance. The soffits are galvanised steel and have a durable factory applied coating, which is available in a wide range of colours.
