Carl Walker, Inc. Receives ICRI Award For Restoration Of Grand Rapids Community College Bostwick Parking Structure
Carl Walker, Inc. received an Award of Merit (Longevity Category) from the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) for the restoration of the Grand Rapids Community Colleges Bostwick Parking Structure in Grand Rapids, Mich. This significant award recognizes parking structures that have had a major restoration project at least 10 years ago and have maintained their structural integrity over the years.
Carl Walker served as the prime consultant providing structural engineering services. The project team also included D.C. Byers Company of Grand Rapids, and ACI/Steelcon of Kalamazoo.
The Bostwick Parking Structure, constructed in 1972, consists of five supported levels and one slab-on-grade parking level. An addition was constructed in 1980 for a total parking area of 1,860 spaces.
A complete visual examination of all floor surfaces, structural elements, and their supports was performed. A chain drag and testing were performed to detect the presence of, and determine the extent of, delaminations and corrosion. It was found to be in poor condition due to deteriorated and leaking expansion joints, floor spalls, delaminations, and corrosion of the post-tensioning system. Increased deterioration and structural capacity was a concern as it did not meet current code standards.
The college desired a long-term repair with low maintenance. A full economic life-cycle analysis was completed to compare the initial versus long-term maintenance costs for multiple repair options. The repair option chosen included the installation of structural steel beams, concrete repairs, and deck coating the supported slabs, which minimized concrete repairs.
The restoration was completed in August 1990 at 25% below the estimated construction budget. The selected repair option provided a repair that could extend the structures life up to 40 years. The restoration was supported by field evaluations in 1998, 2001, and 2004.
