Commend at the Long Night of Research exhibition

Research ambition helps to keep video surveillance in check.

Exhibiting at this years Long Night of Research on April 27, Commend together with renowned research institutions, presents latest methods under the motto Data Protection in Video Surveillance.

The spectrum of topics covered by the many exhibits at this years Long Night of Research ranges from the natural sciences to the arts and numerous others in between. Sponsored by the Austrian Department of Trade and Industry, the event is intended to give researchers a chance to present the results of their labour to the public, and to stir some interest among future scientists. From 5 pm until 11 pm on April 27, visitors all across Austria have a chance to learn about the latest in Austrian research at 180 plus exhibition locations showing around 1,400 exhibits.

Dealing with the issue of data protection in video surveillance is part of their everyday job for Commends Intercom engineers. The "Long Night of Reserch" provides a good opportunity to showcase current research results in cooperation with specialists from the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Science.

Video surveillance is more and more becoming a familiar sight, whether in the streets or office buildings, primarily in the interest of security. At the same time, the question of ensuring personal privacy is becoming more and more urgent. At their stand, Goran Lastro from Commend, together with representatives from the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, explain the methods for recognising and tracking individuals by means of public and private cameras. Their research is focussed on methods for encrypting video streams to prevent unwanted face recognition. Its an important issue that concerns us all, and a very interesting one for us as researchers, explains Goran Lastro. We have designed our exhibit to demonstrate the interesting connections and research results in an appealing way that will be easy to understand for everyone, children and adults alike.
