Tunnel Intercom 2.0 – Case Study

Voices from the Tunnel

No daylight, limited traffic conditions and no mobile phone connection. Anyone requiring help in a road tunnel must be able to rely a hundred per cent on emergency Intercom communication.

A perfect example of the way to go about it is the bypass tunnel near the town of Henndorf am Wallersee in the Austrian province of Salzburg. Along the 2 km stretch of road through the mountain, more than 20 Commend emergency call stations and 48 public address loudspeakers lend a loud and crystal clear voice to those who need assistance and to the tunnel staff and rescue helpers who can provide it. As a result, help is never more than a few metres and a push of a button away.

But there is a lot more to the Commend control room solution for the Henndorf Tunnel than that. Functions include providing direct contact to rescue services via dedicated mobile radio channels, putting the controls for all security equipment at the staff’s fingertips, and keeping them all fully informed about what is going on throughout the tunnel at all times. In short, offering all that is needed in terms of
security and communication support to make the Henndorf tunnel one of the safest ones in Austria.
