Cubic Installs Its First Advanced Electronic Gating System in the United Kingdom

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Cubic Transportation Systems Limited, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (CUB:AMEX), has completed the first installation in the United Kingdom of its next-generation, advanced electronic gating system. The new system was installed on the popular Glasgow-Edinburgh route of ScotRail Railways Ltd., the rail operator that provides nearly 95 percent of passenger train services in Scotland.
cubic_corp.jpgThree ScotRail stations – Queen Street in Glasgow, and Haymarket and Waverley stations in Edinburgh – were selected to receive the new gates because they are key city center stations with the highest passenger volume. In total, 47 walkways and associated control equipment were installed under a contract worth $3 million, including the design layout, material and installation. Cubic also signed a one-year maintenance contract with ScotRail with an approximate value of $365,000.

"ScotRail management is very pleased with the installation as it will enable them to reach their goal of reduced revenue leakage while increasing passenger security and convenience by controlling the passenger flows on the busiest commuter routes,” said Nigel Bryant, managing director of Cubic Transportation Systems Limited. “In addition, the system tracks statistics that are essential to the operator’s marketing strategies, including passenger volume and peak traffic times.”

The new gating system also is the first installation in the UK of Cubic’s new Universal Ticket Transport, a highly versatile, proven component that is a basic building block used in the company’s ticket vending machines, gates, booking office machines and bus fareboxes. It magnetically reads and encodes a wide range of tickets, supporting multiple formats and encoding standards, giving transport operators flexibility to adopt new magnetic ticket formats.
