DDOT installing solar-powered meters

Crews from the District Department of Transportation are installing more than a thousand solar-powered parking meters in Northwest and Southwest Washington.
The meters, which will accept credit cards and coins, are part of several new parking programs DDOT plans to introduce.

"This is a next step towards a complete revamp of our parking system over the next 12 months," DDOT Director Gabe Klein said in a statement. "The new meters are also a piece of a comprehensive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) architecture that that will tie together all of our assets with adaptive controls that change dynamically, and provide real-time information to the public, and DDOT. From our signal system, to the Circulator Bus, to the parking system, all proactively communicating. Did we mention no more quarters?"

The single-space machines accept VISA or MasterCard credit and debit cars, and coins. Officials said the meters also alert DDOT and the contractor via text message or e-mail if there is a malfunction.

The District has initiated several parking pilot programs in the last year.
