Galveston parking meters up and running

Visitors to downtown Galveston should come prepared to pay to park, now that the grace period for the new parking meters has expired, city officials said.
Downtown Galveston now boasts 95 solar-powered parking hubs that allow motorists to pay by cash or coin. The system also has Wi-Fi capability, but it has yet to be implemented and remains in the testing phase, city officials said.

The city has hired parking ambassadors who not only write parking tickets but also serve as "way-finders and mobile visitor centers," according to a city of Galveston press release.

In 2008, Hurricane Ike destroyed 915 parking meters in downtown Galveston. The city has since entered into a public-private partnership with Ampco System Parking to manage the new system.

In the event of another storm, the new meters will be moved out of harm's way, city officials said.
