Green Parking Charges on Camdens Estates

Residents on Camdens housing estates could be charged for their parking permits based on how much CO2 their vehicle emits.
The proposed changes to the charges for parking spaces on Council estates are similar to the Councils emissions based scheme for on-street parking, which came into effect on 1st August 2007.

The changes would mean cheaper residents parking permits for low emission vehicles and higher charges for vehicles that emit the highest levels of CO2.

These proposals are part of a broader package of green transport measures already adopted on Camdens housing estates. This includes the introduction of bicycle storage facilities and car clubs for residents on some estates.

The Council is seeking views from tenants and leaseholders about the proposals, including at the current round of District Management Committee meetings.

Councillor James King, Executive Member for Housing Services said:

We are proposing to introduce a greener approach to charges for parking permits on housing estates. Linking the charge to the carbon emitted by the vehicle will prompt residents to think about the cars they buy and the impact it has on the environment.

The effects of climate change are very real and so this approach to parking permits can help to drive behaviour change and encourage motorists to take account of environmental issues such as climate change and air quality.
