San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to Install 25,000 New Smart Parking Meters

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is set to install 25,000 new smart single space IPS M5 parking meters by February 2015. The smart parking meters are manufactured and supported regionally in San Diego, CA by IPS Group, Inc. (IPS). The new solar powered meters will replace the existing coin-only meters and offer enhanced payment options like credit and debit cards. In addition, customers will be able to pay for their parking via mobile phone.

The meters feature a large LCD display which can support graphics or text in any language. The new meters will allow SFMTA to implement demand-based pricing which helps to generate turnover in high traffic areas and to adjust pricing in accordance with demand. Approximately 1,100 meters will be installed around AT&T Park and will feature special event pricing.

Technology provider IPS Group was awarded the contract after being selected as the highest ranked proposer through a competitive bid process. The company has more than 140,000 smart parking meters installed in North America, including cities similar in scale and scope to the City of San Francisco, such as Los Angeles, Denver, and Washington, DC. IPS has previously provided credit card enabled single-space parking meters for the City’s SFpark pilot program, which was established in order to improve parking in San Francisco through the use of new technologies and policy implementation.
