Town of Alzey becomes smarter

MSR-Traffic supplies a parking guidance system with wireless single-space detection.

The town of Alzey initiated a competition with the task of rearranging the Obermarkt, with its uses as a public open space and pedestrian area and also as a car park, in order to create a high quality solution in terms of space, design and function.

The design by Landschaftsarchitektur GmbH of Bonn, under the leadership of Dipl.-Ing. Gunter Ulrichs-Fischer, convinced the jury with its well-executed, clear spatial composition with flowing barrier-free transitions. In the jury’s opinion the exposure of the built-up borders of the square to the north and south allows an unhindered view of the historic facades of the two-storey buildings as well as the Nikolaikirche (Church of St. Nicholas). The spatial effect in the north-south direction created by this facilitates orientation in the urban space and supports the depth effect of the square.

The Obermarkt will now be redeveloped according to the winner’s plans and the individual parking spaces will be equipped with wireless magnetic field sensors from MSR-Traffic. These detect vehicles of all kinds and transmit the status of the parking spaces (free or occupied) to a repeater, which forwards the information collected to the server. Modern LED displays (similarly equipped with wireless communication and linked to the server) show the driver the way to the next free parking space and also the total number of free spaces. Parking spaces for the handicapped are also integrated and included in the parking space management system. A large part of the otherwise usual car-park search traffic is eliminated and CO2 emissions are lowered.

The system and the individual components can subsequently be evaluated and remotely controlled from anywhere in the world using the ParkGard® Control Centre, a web-based user interface. This software enables the town to generate the most diverse statistics and to detect misuse of the parking spaces for long-term parking or other parking offences.

The compact, space-saving arrangement of the traffic system, equipped with smart technology, makes a solid contribution to the positive revaluation of the entire square.
