National Parking Association Announces Release of 2012 Parking Industry Technology Trends Report

Includes Decision Maker Trends, Technology Adoption by Sector and Mobile Technology Usage

Washington, DC —The National Parking Association (NPA) has announced the release of a North American study to analyze trends, purchasing, buying power and preferences in technology among parking industry professionals. The report signals technology adoption trends across each sector of the parking industry, including private, public, college and university segments. The report also signals emerging adoption of mobile marketing and pay technologies.

“More and more, the parking industry is combining high tech with high touch customer service,” says NPA President Christine Banning, CAE, in announcing the survey results. “In today’s parking marketplace, that means advances in revenue control, access control mobile payment, and mobile marketing.”

Among the key findings in the study:

  • The top 3 technology adoption areas across all parking industry sectors are: parking access control technology, automated cashiering, energy efficient florescent to LED lighting.
  • The study finds 85 percent of commercial operators use automated cashiering; 61 percent of all facilities use energy-efficient fluorescent lighting; and 69 percent of all parking facilities use access control technologies.
  • The industry is moving to neCommerce and sales automation, with mobile payment, pay-by-cell and online reservations leading the way.
  • Green technology usage dominates at college and universities. College campuses lead the industry in landscaping, drainage, solar and electric vehicle technologies.
