Nedap and Geosparc Join Forces to Optimize the Utilization of EV-Charging Spaces in Belgium

Together with platform partner Geosparc, Nedap offers a parking solution for EV-charging parking spaces

Did you ever arrive by car, running low on battery, at an “available” EV charging station only to notice that the car parked in this spot is not charging? Together with platform partner Geosparc, Nedap offers a parking solution for EV-charging parking spaces. The real-time parking data simplifies enforcement within cities and optimizes the utilization of these parking spots.

The Number of Electric Cars is Growing Rapidly

With nearly 7 million electric vehicles on the streets, the mobility trend of electric vehicles continues to increase. It is expected that in 2025 10% of all passenger cars sold worldwide will be electric. This percentage will rise to 28% in 2030 and up to 58% in 2040. This trend requires changes in the infrastructure, such as a growth in EV charging points.

A Limited Amount of EV-Charging Parking Bays

Within cities, office environments and along highways, the number of vehicle charging stations is increasing. However, even though this number is growing, only a limited number of EV-charging parking bays (in relation to the number of electric vehicles) is available.

To make optimal use of this limited capacity, insights about the availability and charging status of a vehicle are necessary. With these insights, drivers can be guided swiftly to available EV charging stations nearby. And, drivers can be notified if their car is fully charged, inviting them to move their electric car and free the EV-charging station for the next EV.

Optimize the Utilization of EV-Charging Parking Spaces

Nedap and Geosparc join forces to enable cities and office environments to optimize the utilization of the available EV-charging parking spaces. With this optimization, the search traffic will decrease and there will be a convenience for the drivers when entering a city or office building environment. In addition, this solution greatly simplifies the enforcement process in public environments.

Geosparc’s Software Shows the Availability of Charging Stations

Nedap’s platform partner Geosparc developed a software solution that is integrated with charging stations and provides insight into the real-time availability of these EV-charging stations. The software indicates whether a car is present (plugged-in or not), whether it is connected, or whether the car is fully charged. Once a car is no longer charging, a notification (via a parking app) can be sent requesting to move the vehicle to a regular parking spot, freeing the e-charging station. The charging station alone cannot determine if the parking space is occupied when the charging station is not being used.

All policy parameters like parking rates, tolerance period, enforcement, and fees are also integrated, freely configurable, and linked to a simulation tool to visualize the impact of the desired or pursued charging station policy. Using this solution in an office environment allows charging all of the company’s electric vehicles with fewer charging stations. By wirelessly detecting the presence of a vehicle, Nedap and Geosparc are adding value to the solution by preventing eCar drivers from arriving at an EV-charging station with an empty battery, to notice that the parking space is occupied.

Nedap’s SENSIT Delivers Real-time Insight Into the Availability of Parking Spaces

SENSIT plays a crucial role within this parking solution because of their real-time insight into the availability of the parking space itself, instead of only the charging station. With this Nedap solution, they deliver accurate, real-time parking data.

SENSIT is a wireless parking bay occupancy detection platform that utilizes robust, accurate, and cost-effective in-ground parking sensors. The parking data that indicates whether a space is occupied and, if so, for how long, is seamlessly integrated into Geosparc’s software.

Real-Time Parking Data Simplifies Enforcement and Optimizes Utilization of EV-Charging Parking Spaces

Through this joint solution, the use of EV-charging parking spaces will be optimized and extra service is provided to e-vehicle drivers. This also simplifies enforcement efforts in public environments and reduces search traffic. In-office environments, this eliminates the need for investing in extra EV charging stations by making efficient use of the existing infrastructure.
