New parking garage could come to ABIA

Cheaper parking could fall victim to new garage
An item on the Austin City Councils next agenda asks the council to approve work that could begin the process of building a new three- or four-story parking garage at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

This is definitely for the benefit of the rental car companies, primarily, said ABIA spokesperson Jim Halbrook.

Rental car companies would occupy the majority of the garage, but Halbrook said more than likely the new garage would add more public parking.

Both the city and the rental car companies agree that Lot A , currently a close-end surface lot, would be the best place to build the new garage.

During construction, the 1,800 parking spots would be closed, but once complete, the new garage would add those spots back. Halbrook said the new spots would more than likely cost more than the spots being replaced.

Currently, Lot A surface spots cost $10 per day while garage parking spots cost $20 per day.

Its a bit of a rip off at $20 a day so, if thats what theyre going to do out here than its going to be a little inconvenient for people like me, said Mike Blair, a Lot A user.

Couldnt the rental car company park out in the farther lots and do shuttles? That might be a better solution, said traveler Wende Lance.

Halbrook says the convenience of having the rental car lots so close has always scored high among ABIA customers in satisfaction surveys.

Currently, rental car companies must drive each car roughly one mile northwest of ABIA to wash and refill them. Halbrook said the new garage would also include a prep area eliminating roughly one million miles driven per year for refueling and washing.

Council is scheduled to vote on the item during its July 29 meeting.

A construction schedule is still being determined.
