New Sky Harbor parking option opens via "The Parking Spot"

The owners of Chicago-based "The Parking Spot," unveiled their state-of-the art, high-tech, covered facility on the north side of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
It's likely you won't have any trouble spotting it - or the company's distinctive shuttles. They are, after all, neon yellow and covered with, well . . . black spots.

Company principals say they are all about serving the customer and having a little fun, too.

After all, the slogan on vans reads, "You think this looks ridiculous? Think about missing your plane."

"Our commitment is to make our customers' airline experience better," company President Martin Nesbitt said. "We consider ourselves part of the hospitality industry."

The new lot will open a second phase in September, bringing the number of covered spaces at the site to just over 1,300.

Parking at Sky Harbor has grown increasingly more challenging in recent years, as the airport continues to see record numbers of passengers. In January 2006, officials increased fees at its remote lots and terminal garages in a bid to curb demand.

There are a total of 23,000 parking spaces at the airport, plus at least five other off-site parking lots in the vicinity, said Julie Rodriguez, a Sky Harbor spokeswoman.

But the Parking Spot thinks it provides a few unique touches that will help draw in customers. In addition to a price in line with its competitors - at about $10 a day - the company offers covered parking, a USA Today at check-in and a chilled bottle of water at checkout.

In addition, shuttles run every five to seven minutes and stop at each car as it parks to help with baggage and drive passengers to the airport.
