Parkeon graduates in Southend

Southend Borough Council (SBC) has installed Parkeon's Varioflex Pay-on-Foot (P-o-F) solution in the 280-space, 3-level underground car park which has been developed at one end of the Town's High Street beneath the University of Essex's new and iconic 10-storey university accommodation block.
The car park is equipped with three Varioflex automatic pay stations, which give drivers the choice of paying with coins, bank notes or Chip & PIN credit/debit cards. The card-reader/payment kit is Parkeon's latest MR40 Payment Card Industry-PIN Entry Device (PCI-PED)-approved device, which guarantees the security of the card within the terminal and is accredited by the UK banking industry. Varioflex terminals and barriers have been installed on the two entry and single exit lanes.

"Parkeon won the contract on merit. We've had a Varioflex system in our 200-space Tyler's Avenue surface car park for a few years and that works very well, despite being attacked regularly," states Derek Kenyon, SBC's Parking Manager, "We were keen to use the same equipment again and plan to centralise the management of both car parks on our Varioflex back-office system."

Although part of a University of Essex site, the new car park will be used mainly by shoppers and business people owing to its town centre location. It has replaced a 1960's multi-storey facility nearby, which is to be demolished. The new facility is open 24 hours a day and continuously manned by attendants from APCOA, the parking operator, which is also responsible for on and off-street enforcement in Southend.
