Parking Pros to Hold Annual Conference in Tacoma

Parking and transportation professionals, urban planners, architects, and exhibitors will gather for the Pacific Intermountain Parking & Transportation Associations Fourth Annual Conference and Trade Show July 26 through 28 at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma, Washington.
Three well-known speakers will discuss the role the parking and transportation industries play in the success of urban and economic development.

Donald Shoup, professor of urban planning at the University of California at Los Angeles, will explain how three key parking policies can help to create great streets, improve the transportation system, restore the environment, and stimulate the economy as part of a presentation entitled, The High Cost of Free Parking.

Helle Lis Søholt, partner and director of Gehl Architects, Copenhagen Denmark, will discuss city transformation projects from around the world that are aimed at developing people-oriented and sustainable cities. She will offer examples of mobility oriented development from Copenhagen, Melbourne, Sydney, New York and Mexico City.

Shawn Conrad, executive director of the International Parking Institute, will discuss how parking and
transportation professionals are interconnected with urban planners, engineers, property managers,
police, public services and many others.

The conference will also feature 21 educational sessions and three tactical communications training seminars for front-line staff. Educational session topics will explore the role parking and transportation play in economic development and urban planning, sustainable best practices in the parking and transportation industries, creating a bicycle culture to include building bicycle parking facilities, engaging communities in comprehensive parking management, and wayfinding for university and college campuses. PIPTA Vice President Josh Kavanagh said this years conference presents an extraordinary opportunity for individuals who work in or partner with the parking and transportation industries.
