Redwood City Partners with Digital Payment Technologies and Tropos to Deploy Parking Meters in Downtown Core

Digital Payment Technologies Corp., a leading supplier of revenue-management solutions for the global parking industry, is pleased to announce it has been selected by Redwood City, California to supply forty WiFi-based parking pay stations for the citys downtown core.
The LUKE pay station by Digital Payment was chosen in order to provide city parkers with a greater range of payment options and convenience while helping to facilitate the implementation of Dr. Donald Shoups revolutionary plan for urban revitalization. Dr. Shoup is a professor of urban planning at UCLA and author of the book The High Cost of Free Parking.

In Redwood City, we have a challenge, says Dan Zack, coordinator of downtown development for Redwood City. We have a downtown core that suffers from gridlock as people circle the area looking for available on-street parking. The irony is that there are stalls sitting empty only blocks away. Dr. Shoups idea is to maintain on-street parking rates that are high enough to ensure 85% capacity, and funnel the money from parking back into area improvements. Based on our initial trials, we are confident this approach can work to solve the challenges in our area.

Redwood Citys LUKE on-street pay stations will be connected to Digital Payments Enterprise Management Server (EMS) via a WiFi MetroMesh Network using equipment manufactured by Tropos Networks. The Tropos equipment is being supplied and implemented in a joint venture between Veraloft, LLC of Menlo Park, CA and Coastside Net, Inc. of Half Moon Bay, CA. This WiFi connectivity will enable the city to offer new capabilities such as real-time credit card authorization, pay-by-cell integration and the ability to add time at any pay station.

Theyre all connected and share information with each other, notes Zack. If you want to spend more time on the east side of downtown and your car is on the west side, you can add time to your original parking permit from any pay station in the network without having to go back to your car. We think people are really going to love that level of convenience.

Digitals EMS will also provide Redwood City with the ability to closely monitor vacancy rates and ensure that parking availability is maintained at the optimal 85% level. If rate changes are required, updates to all of the pay stations may be made immediately via the Internet. Its comforting to know I can change rates and configuration parameters on all the LUKE pay stations from my desk, notes Zack. Its a system that will provide convenience for both the operator and the parker.
"Were excited to be able to work with Redwood City on this project. Digitals parking systems, through the practical implementation of technology, have the power and flexibility to accommodate many parking regimes. Dr. Shoups ideas are revolutionary and have the ability to change the face of parking. Redwood City and Digital are eager to take this vision and implement them in a real life situation," says Andrew Scott, CEO of Digital Payment.
