Savannah to Activate
Motorists in downtown Savannah soon will be able to use their debit or credit cards to pay for the business district's parking meters.
In January, parking officials plan to activate a feature on 80 new meters that will allow the use of bank cards or a prepaid "smart card." For each machine, city crews have had to remove up to 12 existing meters. Officials say that will remove the "picket fence effect" in Savannah's historic downtown. The new meters, costing $8,200 each, should pay for themselves in three years.
