Scheidt & Bachmann Joins Our Barrier vs. Barrierless Debate on Parking Talks

Frank Horak, Director of Product Management & Marketing at Scheidt & Bachmann

With barrierless parking becoming a popular trend we asked industry experts to share their views about how parking access and revenue control systems will adapt. Frank Horak, Director of Product Management & Marketing at Scheidt & Bachmann joined our Parking Talks discussion, and here you can read more about his thoughts on how ticketless solutions can be a convenient alternative for both operators and customers.

Can You Introduce The Concept of Barrierless and Ticketless Parking?

"We have recognized an increase in requests for ticketless parking solutions because they are really convenient, but ticketless solutions don’t necessarily have to be barrierless, although removing the barrier is even more convenient.

"Some parking facilities are more suitable for barrierless solutions than others, and the legal base for ticketless solutions differs considerably from country to country. Therefore, I assume, it will still be some time before barrierless parking becomes the norm. But the trend is there, and of course, we are following it with the greatest interest."

Why Do You Think That Parking Access and Revenue Control Is Such a Key Component in Parking?

"Access and exit control is mandatory for successful parking management, and so it is, of course, a key component of a parking operation. However, access and exit control do not necessarily need to be equated with barriers and ticket machines. Barrierless solutions, combined with an effective enforcement solution, has the possibility to control how many cars are using a facility and ensure that the operator does not lose revenue."

What Developments Can We Expect to See From Scheidt & Bachmann in 2019?

Person uses smartphone to take photo of woman using a parking machine "First of all, we are glad that we already have solutions for both ticketless and barrierless parking. Through the first installations in the field, we have been able to learn a lot about customer behavior with these solutions, so that we can work on improvements.

"One thing that is always of great importance to barrierless and ticketless solutions, is the recognition rate of the number plates via the camera. And with some special algorithms, we are working to increase the rate above the rate that the camera manufacturer grants, which is already pretty high.

"Another thing we are improving is customer convenience, as things become easier without tickets and barriers, so the payment has to become seamless and easy. Besides payment via traditional methods, we already offer the possibility to pay by an app. And we are working on the possibility that you will be able to pay later, for example, at home, if you have forgotten to pay at the parking lot."
