School district will charge for parking to help reduce costs

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district will charge for parking beginning this month at Serauxmen Stadium and Selby Street to reduce its own costs.
The change will affect city of Nanaimo workers and Discovery Community College employees using the parking lot free, as well as the baseball teams, students and track and field clubs that rely on stadium parking.

Pete Sabo said the school district has been providing the parking service in the two areas at its own cost.

This latest move will allow the district to offer public parking in a "suitably sustainable way," a press release reads.

The pay for parking contract has been given to Robbins Parking and money made will go towards lot maintenance.

"The board of education approved the plan for pay parking at these two lots in recognition of the fact that in these times of tight operating budgets, it is appropriate to take steps to recover revenue from our vacant properties," Sabo said.
