Serco wins rebid of LA parking meter collections

The contract consists of providing and managing the revenue collection for 40,000 meters throughout the city. Serco's solution provides advanced vehicle and personnel tracking technologies improving security, response time, and effectiveness.

A key success factor was Serco's solution that reduces the need to manually lift heavy coin canisters, which can weigh up to 40kgs, by using vehicle lift gates and auto-feed conveyer systems.

Since 1993 Serco has serviced and collected cash from the parking meters on the streets of Hong Kong, Kowloon and in cities across the United States including Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore and San Francisco.

In 1998, Serco replaced 23,000 single space and 250 multi space parking meters in the city of San Francisco with electronic parking meters, and Pay & Display machines operated by smart cards that will accept credit and debit cards. The San Francisco contract is particularly unique because Serco constructed a state of the art coin counting facility with an integration of a comprehensive Parking Meter Management System. Additionally, Serco performs revenue and collection from approximately 7,000 parking meters daily which includes, counting, verification and transportation of $100,000 dollars in coin as part of the service provision.

In 1998 the City of Chicago awarded Serco a contract for collections from the approximately 28,000 parking meters. Serco collects more than $27 million revenue for the City every year having increased collection figures by more than $2.4 million from previous years. Serco also provides parking enforcement services including issuing citations for violations. Serco provides various levels of parking collection and enforcement services in a number of Maryland municipalities, Washington DC and West Hollywood, California.

The City of Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, has approximately 41,000 parking meters in various on-street and off-street locations covering 88,000 sq km. Serco personnel collect from about 9000 parking meters daily. The meter collectors also assist the customer by conducting a daily meter audits.
