Siemens bundles expertise in smartcard solutions
Siemens has merged its smartcard-based security solutions business under the roof of Siemens IT Solutions and Services, so bringing together the IT service providers lenghty experience in security solutions with the expertise in smartcard technology and solutions available within the Healthcare Sector.
With this move, Siemens IT Solutions and Services has added to its offering in the area of integrated security solutions, at the same time strengthening its activities within the sector in order to grow further in this important market.
"Smartcard-based security solutions play an increasingly important role not just within businesses, but also in the public sector. For example, look at the ongoing and planned projects to introduce electronic passports, ID cards or driver's licenses," says Christian Oecking, CEO of Siemens IT Solutions and Services.
Solutions of this type have a wide range of applications: They can be used to allow access to buildings and IT systems within enterprises and public institutions, and the card can be used to attach a legally-binding electronic signature to documents or to encrypt the contents of e-mails and hard disks. Sensitive data and information can be protected against unauthorized access. Electronic identity cards such as personal ID cards or driver's licenses allow citizens to access online services such as e-government or e-business more easily and securely. Using the card, which allows individuals to be uniquely identified, for example, they can log into the relevant internet site of a particular provider.
"Part of Siemens IT Solutions and Services' strategy is to deliver holistic solutions. Security products and functions are an essential cornerstone of any IT infrastructure. This is just as applicable to the modernization of government departments or healthcare services as it is to businesses in any industry. We have already delivered a large number of national and international security projects for public-sector customers, and the existing smartcard expertise within the Healthcare Sector is the ideal complement to our portfolio. By bundling our expertise we will be able to offer all our customers comprehensive, integrated security solutions," said Harald Jung, Head of the Civil and National Security Business Segment, who is also responsible for Siemens IT Solutions and Services' security business.
