Siemens to show products and solutions for urban mobility at InnoTrans 2012

Cities are facing the huge challenge of reconciling growth and quality of life. And energy-efficient and sustainable mobility that is attractive to passengers is playing a key role in their plans. Mobility within and between cities will therefore be Siemens' main theme at InnoTrans in Berlin, the world's largest trade fair for transport technology.

The company will be showing solutions and products from a single source: rolling stock specially designed for maximum energy efficiency; ultramodern rail automation that ensures optimum utilization of line and vehicle capacities; technology for optimizing complete operational processes and reducing downtimes and operating costs; and, last but not least, Smart Grid solutions for intelligent traction power supply networks. Siemens provided information on this extensive portfolio at a pre-press conference in Vienna in the runup to this year's InnoTrans trade fair for the railway industry.

Our future lies in our cities. In the year 2010, 51 percent of the world's total population was living in urban areas. This population slice is expected to increase to over 60 percent by 2030 and to 70 percent – of then 9.2 billion people – by 2050. Experts anticipate that, in terms of the annual number of passenger-kilometers travelled, mobility in cities will virtually treble between 2010 and 2050 and make up 64 percent of the total volume of mobility. This is presenting enormous challenges for municipal authorities and transportation operators if they want to continue to offer sustainable mass transit, long-distance passenger and freight services in future.

Siemens wants to give cities effective support in helping them to meet these challenges. So it established a fourth Sector in October 2011 to do just that: the Infrastructure & Cities Sector. This Sector bundles the world's broadest portfolio for urban infrastructure in order to offer customers comprehensive solutions from a single source. It is made up of a total of five Divisions. Three of them are engaged in providing innovative mobility solutions: Rail Systems (rolling stock), Mobility and Logistics (traffic, transport and logistics management) and Smart Grid (intelligent power networks, including rail electrification). Together, they make sure people and goods reach their appointed destinations all over the world – be it within cities, regions and conurbations or over long distances.

Siemens is one of the few suppliers with such an extensive and environmentally-compatible portfolio. For example, it includes: Inspiro, the new-generation metro train; Avenio, Siemens' most modern tram; Desiro RUS, a powerful regional train for the Russian broad gauge network; plus innovative concepts for predictive maintenance and service. What's more, there are interactive operations control systems that allow optimal deployment planning and efficient networking of public transportation. At this year's InnoTrans, Siemens will also be showing modern passenger information systems that provide all necessary information in real-time as well as solutions for e-ticketing.

Once again, Siemens will set up its booth in Hall 4.2 (Both 150) and exhibits in the outdoor display area. Besides the mass transit systems mentioned above, the company will have several locomotives on show in the outdoor display area along with an RIC sleeping car for standard and broad gauge. In the exhibition hall, Siemens will be presenting its Rail IT portfolio, for example with an integrated dispatching and service center as well as an intermodal real-time passenger information system. The company's e-ticketing solution demonstrates how easily cashless payment can work and be applied for the service or route actually used – whether it's for riding a train, for using a bicycle or for parking a car. Smart Grid solutions for intelligent traction power supply, which are facing the challenge of having to rely increasingly on renewable energy sources, round off Siemens' trade fair presence.
