Student will use sustainability grant for parking lots

$300 given to market the idea of sustainability to students
UC Riverside undergraduate Spencer Fong was awarded one of 23 undergraduate research grants by the Office of Instructional Development  at UC Riverside for his Fall proposal to make UC Riverside parking lots more sustainable.

Fong, a global studies major, received a grant to the tune of $300 for his idea which originated as a final project in his Green Building Design class. Specifically, Fong hopes to address the congestion and, as stated in a UCR press release issued on Jan. 6, the "significant amount of unnecessary carbon emissions" that UCR parking lots, such as Lot 30, are unfortunately notorious for.

To do so, his proposal  focuses on the installation of solar panels and complete redesign of various parking lots on campus.

"I want to market the idea of sustainability to the students by building them a structure that not only provides clean and renewable energy for the university but also shade for their cars to make them more comfortable especially in the summer," said Fong.

The Office of Instructional Development states that all proposals are to be prepared with the guidance of a faculty mentor who would  also support the proposal through a letter of recommendation.  As such, Fong will work under the direction of Christopher Staggs, owner of Ideas Collaborative.Staggs was also his professor for the Green Building Design class.

According to the press release, Fong aspires to not only further the research for which he was awarded the grant, but also plans to "work for the university on the project and actually see it built."
