Supplementary Planning Guidance Parking: Adopted March 2003

Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) on Parking standards has been prepared collaboratively between the District and Borough Councils of Northamptonshire. The purpose of the SPG is to expand upon and clarify the interpretation of policies in the Adopted Northamptonshire County Structure Plan (March 2001).
northantscc.gifThe SPG provides a guide to the standards for parking provision considered appropriate for new built development.

Maximum standards for off street car parking are provided, although a lower provision may be sought, particularly in locations accessible by means of transport other than the private car. Car parking is limited to an upper threshold of 1.5 off street car parking spaces per dwelling, which shall be applied as an average on a site by site basis. The provision of convenient secure cycle parking is fundamental to attracting modal shift to cycling, therefore cycle parking standards are expressed as a minimum. The SPG additionally provides minimum standards for off street lorry parking.

The SPG provides guidance on residential parking design and outlines opportunities to use a combination of dedicated and communal parking in new developments. Mobility standards catering for the needs of people with disabilities and those with young children are additionally provided. Parking standards for schools and special schools are also outlined in the SPG.

The parking SPG was formally adopted by Northamptonshire County Council on the 20th March 2003.
