Case Study: Parking Guidance System City of Kaiserslautern (D)

The Starting Position

The city of Kaiserslautern, known for its university, with approx. 100.000 citizens, established a new and attractive shopping destination with the new shopping mall called „K in Lautern”. The existing Parking Guidance System installed in the year 2000 had to be renewed therefore.

The SWARCO Solution

As content of this project, all Park Data Controller in the parking facilities were completely renewed.

The central server of the Parking Guidance System was updated concerning both hardware and software. In addition to the Central PGS Server, also three more work stations were delivered. Besides of changing the lettering of existing locations, 10 more dynamic and static locations were added to the Parking Guidance System.

Variable Message Signs

The Variable Message Signs have integrated displays in LCD- technique that inform the driver about the available parking lots.

The Displays of the VMS are backlighted with LED- technique.

The data transmission is executed via the urban traffic light signal system network. According to the customer’s request, the Parking Space Signs will be controlled directly by the Park Data Controller.

Parking Guidance Server

The PGS server in the traffic computer office of the city gathers the data of the connected parking facilities and determines the switching commands for the variable message signs. The data are archived and can be analyzed for later traffic statistical purposes. The operation of the Central Computer occurs from the work station in the traffic computer office as well as further work stations in the urban administration and in the City civil works administration.
