Town goes after parking scofflaws

The Brattleboro Parking Enforcement Department is using the Internet to step up its efforts to recover more than $200,000 in outstanding fines and fees owed to the town.
As of Wednesday, a list of license plate numbers from Vermont and New Hampshire has been posted on the towns Web site, www.brattleboro.org, as well as the Brattleboro Police Web site, www.brattleboropolice.org.

Anyone can visit these sites and check the lists, which are sorted by state and license plate number, to see if their vehicle has received parking tickets. The department said other states will be added to the list in the near future, and the posting of names of vehicle owners is also being considered.

The department said it decided to try using the Internet in addition to conventional methods to collect fines and fees, including notifying violators via the U.S. mail and immobilizing parked vehicles.

Ticket fines and fees owed vary from $20 to $460, according to the department, and it is hoping for voluntary compliance to help reduce further collection efforts and expenses to the town.
